1 Green Gauge – Architects Build Your Home on the Green Gauge

A Green Home Architect created an interactive “Green Gauge” on his website to help his clients Build Your Home on the Green Gauge. They see the “Greenness” of their choices for their new custom house designs.  That Architect’s Green Gauge goes up or down as clients make choices for their roofing, insulation, A/C systems, windows & doors & other project items.  This tool is fun, easy to use, free, educational and advances  sustainable home architecture & energy efficient residential architects.

The Green Gauge for Residential Architects & Their Clients Who Want Green Home Architecture

Beginnings of the Green Gauge:  On Twitter.com, That Architect Architect has a Username that is: GreenHomeArch.  If you go online in your own account and go to your search box on the right side and enter: GreenHomeArch or Green Mountain House Architect, you will mainly see his last dozen or so Green Mountain House Architect GREENTIPS.  He posts a new green (or environmental, energy conservative, healthy home design) TIP every day.  At present, there are dozens, with hundreds more on the way.   The home architects of That Architect design nice houses to earn a living and they use green architecture principles to create their residential designs. That Architect Architect is the actual, professional name of our company.

Clients come to The Architect asking that their house designs be green, sometimes like they are picking a wall paint color.  They sometimes seem confused that there are construction price tags associated with the level of environmental choices for a residence, or “Greenness,” as if green choices should be no more expensive or less expensive than conventional construction.  Some green choices can be had reasonably, and those choices they call “Going Green 4 Less,” one of That Architect Architect’s Green Design Initiatives that allow people to upgrade from conventional to more efficient choices for very little increase in cost.  There are other choices that are more expensive. 

To have a totally “green” residence, for instance, would result in a client spending perhaps 10% to 15% More +/- than conventional construction, depending on whose scale of greenness one uses and which systems and material options are selected.

Green Home Architect That Architect and the Origins of the Green Gauge

That Architect has been trying to think of a way for their clients and others to realize the impact of their choices.  After brainstorming, they invented what they call their That Architect Architect GREEN GAUGE.  They also call it: Build Your Home on the Green Gauge for free.  This is an interactive vertical bar “amount” indicator of how environmental, energy efficient and healthy one’s choices are.  The Green Gauge tool is on The Architect’s website at this URL/link:

If you are on his website, that means you are already here.  We suggest you link to this by adding this as a favorite on your browser; you’ll probably want to return here every time you want to test a house design by “building ” it on the Green Gauge, much the same as you might “build” a vehicle on Ford or GM’s website.

On the Green Gauge, you simply click radio button choices answering several questions about various materials and systems for your house, then you will see how much “green” grows in the Green Gauge, as a result of your choices.  You can back up and change your previous answers if you wish.  There are educational blurbs off to the right side, that become visible when one hovers over the various answers, so that you can see, before you select them, the philosophy, relative costs and explanations of the impact of your Green, or not-so green design choices.  Stephen Clack, AIA, LEED GA, a The Architect associate handling the Orlando area architecture, suggested that the gauge grow as the choices clients make become more environmental.  Steve also wanted to have additional features like solar hot water heaters, but only so much could be covered in this first edition of the green gauge.  The idea is to have an interactive tool to help people understand how to have a healthier house and World.  Informed environmental architectural choices for their custom houses will make the difference.  Other architectural firms have The Architect’s permission to link to their Green Gauge webpage to help their clients understand the impact or their choices.
